Assigning a Semantic Scope to Operations
نویسنده
چکیده
I propose that the characteristics of the scope disamhiguation process observed in the literature can be explained in terms of the way in which the model of the situation described by a sentence is built. The model construction procedure I present builds an event structure by identifying the situations associated with the operators in the sentence and their mutual dependency relations, as well as the relations between these situations and other situations in the context. The procedure takes into account lexical semantics and the result of various discourse interpretation procedures such as definite description interpretation, and does not require a complete disambiguation to take place.

Hybrid Model for Semantic Similarity Measurement
Expressive knowledge representations with flexible semantic similarity measures are central for the functioning of semantic information retrieval, information integration, matchmaking etc. Existing knowledge representations provide no or not sufficient support to model the scope of properties. While properties in featureand geometric models always refer to the whole concept, structured represen...
متن کاملWhen Wide Scope Is Not Enough: Scope and Topicality of Discourse Referents
This paper analyses the semantic attributes discourse referents in Catalan Sign Language may have in order to have a corresponding location established in sign space. It is argued that a combination of scope and topicality is required when analysing the correlation between the introduction of entities into the discourse and assigning a spatial location.
متن کاملA procedure for Web Service Selection Using WS-Policy Semantic Matching
In general, Policy-based approaches play an important role in the management of web services, for instance, in the choice of semantic web service and quality of services (QoS) in particular. The present research work illustrates a procedure for the web service selection among functionality similar web services based on WS-Policy semantic matching. In this study, the procedure of WS-Policy publi...
متن کاملSemantic Knowledge Partitioning
Some operations to decompose a knowledge base (considered as a first order logic formula) in ways so that only its semantics determines the results are investigated. Intended uses include the extraction of “parts” relevant to an application, the exploration and utilizing of implicit possibilities of structuring a knowledge base and the formulation of query answers in terms of a signature demand...
متن کاملDirectional Locatives in Event Structure: Asymmetry between Goal and Source
This paper investigates the syntactic and semantic differences between two types of directional locatives: (i) Goal locatives (e.g., into the house) and (ii) Source locatives (e.g., from the house). We identify their contrastive syntactic behavior in various constructions, and account for their asymmetry by assigning them two distinct underlying base positions. Furthermore, we argue that their ...
